Partnerships

At the invitation of Noel Isaacs, overseer of the Himalayan Region Vineyard churches, Vineyards have been invited to explore opportunities for partnering with the Vineyards of this area of Nepal and north east India.

Relational history: David Ruis and Noel Isaacs have built a long standing friendship over the last decade, with Noel and his wife Donna spending three months in Canada in 1995 strengthening ties with the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard and their leadership. The Isaacs were sent out from WCV and in 1998 they planted the Kathmandu Vineyard in Nepal. WCV and Kathmandu Vineyard have sustained this partnering relationship to date. In the ensuing years, 11 other Nepali Vineyard churches, throughout the Himalayan region have been planted in connection with Kathmandu Vineyard.
Most of the leaders of these Vineyards are first generation followers of Jesus. These leaders are all mentored by Noel, who approached the Vineyards a couple of years ago inviting a relationship of friendship, mutual encouragement and equipping, similar to what was developed with WCV over a longer number of years. In 2005, a group of pastors and leaders from 5 different Canadian Vineyards went to Nepal to initiate relationships with some of the local Vineyards. A result of this exploratory trip was a follow-up visit in October of 2006 by 3 of the previous Vineyard leaders, along with one new one, connecting with a number of the Himalayan Region Vineyards (HRV) through developing friendship and ministry opportunities.
The existing partnership relationships will continue to grow. Newly interested Vineyards can explore opportunities for partnering by joining a team travelling to the Himalayan region late September into early October, 2007.

Five ways a Vineyard church can participate in partnering:

  1. MERCY/COMPASSION GIVING - Involvement in mercy/compassion ministries by giving a regular amount (perhaps monthly or quarterly) for work with street children, new boys work, skill training school for the single mothers, Food hamper bags, education for our poor vineyard children, Medical outreach and clinic. Library, youth reaching efforts, and many more
  1. EQUIPPING SUPPORT - Facilitating equipping by giving a regular amount toward internal costs of training emerging leaders. E.g. Transportation or material costs.

The accountability for disbursed funds is through the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard. So funds designated to the Himalayan Partnership should be sent to the WCV, who will oversee their distribution and use. 1. PARTICIPATING IN A MITRA – Mitra is a Nepali word describing friendship and connection. One of our goals is to have each of the 12 Vineyards develop such mitras with a single or a cluster of Vineyards. (Below is a brief description of each of the 12 Vineyards.*) Presently, Kamloops Vineyard is moving towards a mitra with Kotgaon Vineyard. Epic and Faith Vineyard are also developing partnerships with Gatling and Nessing Vineyards. Winnipeg Village Vineyard has initiated a mitra with Champi Vineyard. Kelowna Vineyard is connecting with Noel and awaiting his direction for where we are best to partner. These growing relationships will involve regular connecting, at least once a year visits, equipping, mutual sharing of life and resources. Once a mitra is initiated, WCV will be available to help churches with further cultural adaptation. For starting, they have written a document including 10 principles to guide us in working effectively in mitras. This document can be sent to you on request. For this or other information on trips and stepping towards partnership, contact Charmaine Kelder at jckelder@shaw.ca.
  1. MOBILE BIBLE SCHOOL – Many of the pastors and leaders in the HRV grew up in Hindu or Buddhist families and may have only a limited education. They are scattered in many remote areas and don’t have computers or internet access. Many are bivocational and have families for whom they need to continue providing. These circumstances make it difficult to utilize some of the existing Vineyard training resources such as VBI or VLI. We have therefore decided to bring good biblical instruction into various locations throughout the region for a series of classes spread out over a few years to gradually build a solid biblical foundation among the pastors and leaders. During its first year, the Vineyard Mobile Bible School will provide six modules of 16 hours each, taught in segments of four days each by Vineyard pastors, some from the US and some from Canadian Vineyards. Each teacher will be asked to teach on a chosen topic from the curriculum, provide well developed notes that can be translated several months ahead, and commit to coming into some of the remote areas of the region to teach for one week. For more information on curriculum and possible times for going to the region, contact Tim Schultz at timnest@shaw.ca.
  1. PROJECTS – In the Himalayan region, multiple initiatives are in motion, from digging wells, buying seed, various micro-enterprise opportunities, building meeting places and training centres (homes are very small). Such project involvement might mean a one time gift toward the project. There is a process in place to avoid fostering dependency. For current project opportunities, check the Himalayan Vineyard website – / Again, donations should be sent to the WCV.

As you can see, the opportunities are many. You may choose to be involved in small ways or larger ones. Be assured that any investment by a Vineyard in the HRV will be valued there and provide increased opportunities for expanding the Kingdom of God. Churches are being planted and established. Having seen some of the first fruits of harvest from this vineyard – vibrant, passionate Nepalese worship of Jesus, it’s hard not to be excited about the privilege of partnering with Nepali believers whose eyes are on the many there who have not as yet given allegiance to Jesus, our King.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Brief description of the Himalayan Region Vineyards

  • Nessing Vineyard
  • Gatlang Vineyard

After a 10 hour jeep ride North of Kathmandu there are 2 churches and 2 more coming out of them. They are almost on the Tibet border and involve a people group that is rural and cut off from most western influences… The Chief of the Nessing Vineyard was a witch doctor before he came to Christ. Now his son is the pastor of the church and over 2/3 of the village has come to Christ. Gatlang is just over the hill (4 hr hike) and holds the training centre being build by the vineyards for that area. The other 2 villages are within 4 hours hiking as well.

  • Kathmandu Vineyard
  • Katgaon Vineyard
  • Champi Vineyard

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and has a population of 2 million. The Kathmandu Vineyard has a facility that houses several pastors and staff, several street children, a medical clinic and rooms for skill development (sewing, etc). It is the mother church and within an hour of the city are 2 more churches that are pastored from Kathmandu. Both those churches started with power encounters. Winnipeg Centre has been partnering with Kathmandu since the beginning and could use partners now. Winnipeg Village church is also about to start a partnership with Champi Vineyard and could use other partners.

  • Gitang Vineyard
  • Mukrung Vineyard
  • Namchi Vineyard
  • Dharay Gaon

Namchi Vineyard is the most northern Vineyard in the India province of Sikkim in the Himalayan region. Silas, the primary church planter in that region pastors that church. Silas was a witch doctor and a rebel leader before he came to Christ a decade or more ago. This area of India is more Nepalese in culture, topography and language. Gitang Vineyard is the powerful story of the “dragon” that terrorized the village until the vineyard pastor, Silas and his first disciples in that village broke its power through prayer. Gitang is now pastored by the first Christian in the village – a single woman. Mukrung Vineyard was born out of the story of the deliverance of the village in Gitang.

  • Pedong Vineyard
  • Bara – number and Kashyem Vineyard
  • Siliguri Vineyard. These are some of the other churches in Northern India which are still Nepalese in culture. Noel’s brother Ben has moved to Siliguri with his family to plant that church. The other two churches are close together. Pedong is a strong church which hosted the recent Himalayan region Vineyards annual conference.
